I developed as a teacher by progressive understandings about communication, what it is, how it can be taught, how it can be assessed. A key concept in communicative teaching is personalization – which means having student investment, not just invovlement, as the launching pad for teaching. Easier said than done, but I think it’s worth searching for the heart of a student’s motivation – whether or not it’s related to language learning – before adding on the teaching of language.
